LSU's Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) program utilizes principles from science and mathematics to explore information sensing, transmission, and processing, along with the electrical, optical, and magnetic characteristics of materials and electrical energy generation/distribution. This field opens doors to diverse career paths in computing, telecommunications, control systems, electronics, and power engineering. ECE alumni have achieved success across industries, academic institutions, and startup ventures worldwide. Both faculty and students engage in pioneering research across multiple ECE specialties that significantly influence their fields.
The Electrical & Computer Engineering Division provides graduate programs culminating in MS and PhD degrees. Research concentrations encompass: Control Systems (covering system identification, robust/adaptive control, fault-tolerant systems, and networked control), Communications & Signal Processing (including digital/wireless communications, data compression, DSP, and image analysis), Computer Engineering (focusing on architectures, graphics, parallel computing, embedded systems, reconfigurable computing, vision systems, and fault-tolerant design), Electronics (spanning materials science, micro/nano technologies, photonics, electro-optics, and VLSI design), and Power Systems (addressing power electronics, harmonic analysis, electric machines, drive systems, grid stability, renewable energy, smart grids, and energy conversion). Students may also pursue an interdisciplinary focus in Information Technology.
