This program results in certification for teaching in Louisiana and numerous other states, equipping students to instruct physical education and health for grades K-12 while also qualifying them to coach in diverse environments. Learners may choose to pursue a coaching minor alongside their K-12 major, requiring an extra 12 credit hours for Health and PE majors (17 hours for other concentrations).
Those pursuing careers in teaching, coaching, or supervision are highly advised to become SHAPE America student members and maintain their affiliation throughout their professional journey. This association offers resources, guidance, and support to professionals establishing, developing, and managing programs related to health, leisure, and movement activities. Participants may also consider joining the state-level counterpart, the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (LAHPERD). Membership is affordable and includes benefits like the LAHPERD Journal, newsletters featuring state updates, current research, and convention information. Student members can obtain professional liability insurance, particularly recommended during student teaching placements.
