LSU's Disaster Science and Management (DSM) Program operates within the Department of Geography and Anthropology. Students can pursue either a B.A. or B.S. in Geography with a DSM concentration through this department, or complement their major with a DSM minor.
The DSM curriculum fosters comprehensive knowledge about disasters' effects on natural systems, infrastructure, and communities. It equips learners with practical approaches for disaster preparedness, risk reduction, emergency response, and post-disaster recovery. Participants gain hands-on experience through service initiatives (like creating emergency protocols for community organizations), volunteer opportunities, and customized internships aligned with their professional aspirations. The program facilitates networking with peers and experts across various disaster-related disciplines. Through DSMA, the student association, members access specialized training and professional development resources. Graduates emerge prepared for diverse career paths in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or private industry, while also building strong foundations for advanced studies in fields ranging from healthcare and engineering to social sciences and environmental disciplines.
