A comprehensive exploration of ceramic materials, their historical roots, and modern uses in artistic expression
The institution provides ceramic-focused pathways within both the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art and Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art programs. Students can also pursue an undergraduate minor or enroll in a special post-baccalaureate program.
Ceramics coursework encompasses wheel-throwing techniques, hand-building methods, slip-casting processes, tile production, material analysis, studio work, approach refinement, and specialized classes alongside seminars that foster analytical skills through written work, presentations, and evaluations. Additional art history and studio art electives broaden perspectives and encourage cross-disciplinary connections.
At the undergraduate level, the program first exposes students to ceramics' diverse potential. Intermediate classes deliver focused training in methods and processes while nurturing personal artistic vision. Ceramics majors receive semi-private workspaces and progress through higher-level courses that enhance both ceramic-specific abilities and broader visual arts competencies. Advanced instruction concentrates on cultivating distinctive artistic voices and producing cohesive portfolios.
