The Disaster Science and Management program is an interdisciplinary initiative designed to prepare students for careers in emergency management across government, nonprofit, and corporate sectors by offering:
Comprehensive knowledge about how disasters affect natural systems, infrastructure, and communities,
Foundational approaches for developing effective disaster preparedness plans, risk reduction measures, emergency response protocols, and recovery processes.
Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with a Disaster Science and Management concentration at the undergraduate level. Both undergraduate and graduate students may complete a Minor in Disaster Science and Management (DSM).
The Disaster Sciences and Management Minor fulfills the educational prerequisites for the CEM (Certified Emergency Manager) and AEM (Associate Emergency Manager) certifications. Additional details are available through the International Association of Emergency Managers.
This academic program operates under the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, with leadership provided by Dr. Barry Keim.
