The Forensic Social Work specialization equips students to integrate social work practices with the legal framework, encompassing relevant local, state, and federal regulations, civil and criminal courts, juvenile justice systems, law enforcement, and correctional institutions. Your caseload might include children or adults, individuals or families, as well as organizations or communities. Their legal challenges could range from child custody and parental rights disputes stemming from domestic violence and neglect to offenses linked to mental health and addiction. Clients may encounter arrest and imprisonment, be institutionalized or hospitalized, or be under probation or parole supervision. This concentration trains students to assist these diverse groups by recognizing systemic problems affecting clients, conducting evaluations and therapy sessions, designing and executing intervention strategies, facilitating referrals, and acting as strong advocates for vulnerable populations. After earning their MSW with a forensic social work focus, graduates can pursue New York State's Advanced Certificate in Forensic Social Work by completing just one extra course available through Long Island University.
