The dual Master of Science program in Childhood Education/Early Childhood Education equips future educators and leaders to support children from infancy through sixth grade. Students cultivate diverse perspectives on child development, educational approaches, evaluation techniques, and learning environments within a child-focused curriculum. The program prepares graduates for careers in various educational institutions such as public and private schools, Head Start initiatives, childcare centers, and other child-focused programs up to grade 6. Designed for bachelor's degree holders from accredited institutions seeking teaching certification, this program leads to eligibility for New York State's Initial Teaching Certification. Current educators with bachelor's degrees and initial certification can also enhance their skills to teach children from birth through sixth grade. The curriculum fulfills New York's master's degree requirement for Professional Teaching Certification, consisting of 14 education courses (42 credits), a Preschool Practicum (3 credits), and Supervised Student Teaching with Seminar (3 credits). Coursework covers children's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth across diverse cultures, along with language arts instruction theory and practice. The program features courses in Educational Psychology, Early Childhood Creative Expression, Child Development, and Emergent Literacy, plus subject-specific methods aligned with Next Generation Learning Standards. Upon completing degree requirements, passing state exams (EAS, CST, and edTPA), and attending required seminars, graduates receive NYSED certification for Early Childhood (Birth-Grade 2) and Childhood Education (Grades 1-6).
