This program offers specialized education in Art Therapy and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, comprising 60 total credits. Students complete 48 credits within the Clinical Art Therapy curriculum and 12 credits through the Department of Counseling and Development.
Graduates qualify for New York State's Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) certification and can take the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE) for national registration. The program holds national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Prospective students should verify their state's specific licensure requirements.
Classes maintain an intimate setting with 8-22 students, focusing on the therapeutic applications of painting, drawing, and sculpture across diverse age groups. Artistic practice remains central to the curriculum, with students creating artwork in all core seminars. The Drawing, Painting and Sculpture for the Art Therapist course concludes with a public exhibition of student creations.
The program fosters a collaborative clinical art therapy environment involving students, faculty, departmental partners, and local artists. Over 30-40 internship opportunities help students complete mandatory 700 clinical hours. Research forms a cornerstone of the program, requiring nine thesis credits. Student research has been featured at national conferences, and faculty maintain strong reputations for clinical contributions within the art therapy field.
