The Department of Teaching and Learning provides a prestigious dual undergraduate program in health education and physical education, equipping students to instruct both subjects across elementary, middle, and high school levels. This revamped 127-credit Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Education and Physical Education enhances career opportunities and results in New York State Initial Teaching Certification for both fields.
Participants in this program master classroom management strategies, curriculum development, and instructional planning for students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Foundational biology courses in the liberal arts curriculum provide essential knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
The Health Education curriculum explores nutrition, healthcare systems, sexual health and family planning, personal wellness, and substance use in modern society. Students develop skills to facilitate open, non-judgmental discussions with youth about their health-related experiences, perspectives, and values.
The Physical Education component teaches how to design engaging fitness programs for children and teens. Students gain expertise in structuring movement activities, establishing guidelines, delivering high-practice lessons, evaluating student progress, and recognizing sports injuries.
