The 123-credit Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and Special Education equips you to become a skilled, compassionate, and motivational educator for both general and special education students from infancy through second grade.
During your undergraduate studies, you'll explore child development theories, motivation strategies, and learning approaches for children aged birth to 8 years. You'll develop expertise in fostering student engagement, self-responsibility, and peer collaboration. The curriculum covers diverse subjects from science to music to language arts, while also teaching assessment methods for tracking children's cognitive, social, and physical growth. You'll learn classroom management techniques for diverse learners, culminating in a full-semester student teaching placement to apply your skills. This program leads to dual NYS initial teaching certifications.
A liberal arts and sciences concentration is mandatory for this program.
Upon fulfilling all degree requirements, passing NYS licensure exams (EAS, CST, and edTPA), and completing required seminars (Child Abuse Identification & Reporting, SAVE, DASA, Child Abduction Prevention, and Substance Abuse Prevention), you'll receive two initial teaching certifications from NYSED. For current certification updates, consult the NYSED certification website.
