The Japanese studies major consists of 35 credits: at least 23 credits from Japanese language courses beyond level 2, 3 study abroad credits, and 9 credits from English-taught electives about Japan. Among the 23 Japanese language credits, 3 must be for a major research paper (JPNS 290). Students facing financial or academic constraints regarding study abroad may discuss alternative options with advisor approval. In our interconnected world, understanding foreign languages and cultures is essential for personal growth and career advancement. Lehigh's Modern Languages and Literatures program, offering majors or minors in five languages and instruction in eight total, equips students for global professional environments. Our internationally recognized faculty combine scholarly excellence with dedicated teaching, creating personalized learning experiences. The department provides language instruction, literature and cultural studies, film courses, and international communication fundamentals. We actively promote participation in Lehigh's diverse study abroad programs to enhance language immersion and cultural understanding.
