The Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology provides students with comprehensive training in regional music styles, performance traditions, historical contexts, and cultural connections, equipping them for doctoral studies or professional roles in world music. This program blends theoretical frameworks with practical applications, enabling students to engage effectively with both specialists and general audiences in ethnomusicology.
While maintaining a global perspective, Kent State's music faculty specialize in research areas including Central Africa, Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Caribbean, the Americas, the Middle East, and popular music studies. The curriculum explores themes like cultural identity, semiotics, gender studies, political dynamics, ritual practices, globalization, artistic hybridity, and interdisciplinary arts connections (such as dance and theater).
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, graduates will be able to:
Analyze, interpret, and evaluate key theoretical concepts and historical contributions in ethnomusicology, along with representative musical traditions across various periods, regions, and cultures.
Apply fieldwork methodologies competently, including photographic, video, and audio documentation, as well as interview techniques and observational research methods.
Develop and deliver effective academic presentations suitable for conferences, performances, and instructional settings, demonstrating strong time management, clear communication, multimedia integration, and audience engagement skills.
