The Photography programs blend modern and classic methods while addressing key issues in today's art world. Learners engage with diverse traditional and innovative approaches through structured courses and self-directed projects, utilizing darkrooms and studios equipped for black-and-white, color, large-format, alternative processes, studio setups, and digital photography.
The MFA specialization in Photography is a three-year course focused on rigorous examination of the medium, prioritizing exploration and inquiry into current lens-based artistic approaches that shape personal creative and scholarly goals.
Graduate photography students are provided with individual studios and can utilize analog, digital, and combined image-making methods. During their final year, MFA candidates showcase a Capstone project through a solo exhibition accompanied by a thoroughly researched supporting document. These students collaborate with an advisory committee of four or five cross-disciplinary art professors for regular evaluations while also pursuing independent studio practice. Both scheduled and impromptu feedback sessions with department faculty occur as needed.
