The Digital/Experimental Media (DX Media) initiative is a cross-disciplinary academic and research program focused on investigating the connections between art, science, technology, and culture, along with the innovative use of diverse media forms in artistic expression.
The MFA curriculum in Digital/Experimental Media prioritizes creative work grounded in historical, philosophical, and theoretical inquiry. Participants are urged to incorporate knowledge from non-traditional artistic fields and to critically examine conventional definitions of appropriate artistic mediums, settings, and methodologies. This program fosters a multidisciplinary perspective in developing digital and experimental projects, enabling students to navigate the fluid boundaries separating artistic practice, scientific inquiry, cultural studies, and historical context. Potential areas of specialization encompass (but aren't restricted to): cartographic arts, visual representation techniques, data visualization, network systems and digital communications, ecological and biological applications, community engagement projects, electronic interfaces and hardware programming, interactive installations, systemic artworks, and audio experimentation.
