K-State provides a four-year horticulture degree program. The Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources collaborates in an interdisciplinary food science and industry initiative.
Horticulture combines scientific knowledge and creative cultivation of plants for environmental enhancement, beauty, high-yield food production, or community wellness purposes. This program prepares students for careers in horticultural production, service industries, or scientific research. Graduates qualify for advanced studies nationwide and can fulfill educational prerequisites for certification by the American Registry of Certified Professionals in Agronomy, Crops, and Soils.
The curriculum includes foundational general education courses alongside specialized agricultural, horticultural, and business classes. Horticulture students select from concentrations in production, golf course/sports turf management, horticultural science, or landscape horticulture. The science specialization emphasizes fundamental sciences for graduate preparation, ideal for those pursuing research or extension careers. Following their second year, students must complete a three- to six-month approved internship.
Horticulture graduates find employment opportunities across multiple sectors, including plant production, landscape management, floral arrangement, botanical institutions, retail garden centers, sports field maintenance, and golf course supervision.
