Established in 1876, Johns Hopkins University pioneered as America's first institution dedicated to research and doctoral studies. Early scholars included Josiah Royce and John Dewey, while C.S. Peirce served on the initial faculty. Today, the Philosophy Department upholds this legacy by training graduate students to produce innovative work and enter academic careers. The program typically hosts around 15 students in coursework alongside 15 dissertation writers. With intentionally small class sizes, we seek students who value personalized mentorship. Our curriculum balances specialized focus with comprehensive philosophical education, offering courses in ancient through contemporary Western thought, plus systematic studies in epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, philosophy of science, physics, language, mind, mathematics, logic, and aesthetics. Students may also count relevant courses from other departments toward their PhD or MA requirements when appropriate.
While an undergraduate major in philosophy is good preparation for graduate study in the department, applications are welcomed from students with other majors whose interests are now turning toward philosophy.
Students must have IELTS Academic Band Score equal to 7, or a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), and 100 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
