The Epidemiology doctoral program is grounded in public health and population-based studies. Candidates employ epidemiological techniques to investigate intricate health challenges. The PhD curriculum spans two years of classes plus a minimum of two years dedicated to research. Mandatory components include teaching preparation, serving as a teaching assistant for methodology and subject-specific courses, along with completing a comprehensive written exam, mock oral exam, preliminary examination, various oral and poster presentations, and ultimately defending a dissertation.
The General Epidemiology and Methodology pathway caters to those pursuing careers as generalists or methodologists by providing comprehensive foundational training. This track offers specialization options in Advanced Methodology or Pharmacoepidemiology, or permits students to develop a customized research focus. Close collaboration with advisors is essential to tailor coursework to individual objectives. Suggested classes include epidemiology, statistics, and bioscience offerings. Faculty across the Department can mentor students in this track. Those focusing on Methodology are strongly advised to consider the Biostatistics MHS program.
