The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences provides PhD programs across diverse scientific fields, including atmospheric studies, marine sciences, geochemistry, geological sciences, planetary exploration, and biosphere research. We aim to cultivate researchers capable of producing groundbreaking, enduring advancements in their respective areas.
Our graduate curriculum is structured to equip each student with essential research skills and knowledge for pursuing independent scientific work and building successful careers. The PhD pathway offers adaptable coursework tailored to individual backgrounds and research interests. The program features both foundational courses and specialized seminars with rotating subjects. Students have opportunities to enroll in relevant courses across Johns Hopkins University's various departments, aligning with their specific research objectives.
We seek excellent, motivated students from a variety of backgrounds. An undergraduate degree and/or professional experience in the earth or planetary sciences is beneficial, but it is not a requirement for graduate admission to our department. We encourage applications from interested students with undergraduate degrees in any of the physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
Students must have IELTS Academic Band Score equal to 7, or a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), and 100 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
