Our Art History program focuses on exploring art through historical, social, cultural, and philosophical perspectives, along with rigorous examination of artistic and architectural styles. Students gain hands-on experience through museum internships and research opportunities at Hopkins' institutions like the Archaeological Museum, Homewood Museum, and Evergreen Museum, while also collaborating with professionals at Baltimore's premier galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art and Walters Art Museum.
The BA/MA combined program is exclusively available to Johns Hopkins undergraduates majoring in art history who are enrolled in the honors track, which involves completing a senior honors thesis. Selection criteria prioritize exceptional academic achievement in previous Art History coursework.
Prospective candidates for the five-year program should express their intent during junior year spring semester. Before applying, students must meet with the undergraduate studies director, their academic advisor, and the department administrator. Applications must be submitted through the graduate admissions portal by the departmental deadline (December 15th) during fall semester of senior year to qualify for spring admission under concurrent status. During their fourth year, students design a customized study plan to prepare for advanced coursework in their fifth year. All bachelor's degree requirements must be fulfilled by the conclusion of the fourth year.
