The Ancient Near East marks the dawn of recorded history, witnessing humanity's earliest agricultural practices, urban settlements, and the creation of written language. Our program provides research collaborations, fellowship options, and entry to our Archeological Museum, enabling you to explore ancient Near Eastern civilizations broadly or focus on one of four key disciplines: Northwest Semitic languages and literature (covering Biblical studies), Egyptology, Assyriology, or Near Eastern archaeology. Established in 1883, our Department of Near Eastern Studies pioneered the first U.S. doctoral program in this discipline. Students can select from four specialized tracks: Assyriology, Egyptology, Hebrew Bible and Northwest Semitic Studies, or Near Eastern Archaeology/Art.
