This interdisciplinary humanities course explores the historical foundations of scientific, medical, and technological progress across cultures. You'll discover how science transcends mere rule-following, emerging as a profoundly human endeavor. The program cultivates an appreciation for humanistic approaches to contemporary challenges in these fields.
Jointly offered by the History of Science and Technology and History of Medicine departments, this major/minor program examines how scientific and medical advancements have shaped societies throughout history. Designed for both STEM and non-STEM students, the curriculum demonstrates science as a cultural phenomenon rather than just technical practice. The program particularly benefits science double majors and pre-med students, featuring Smithsonian scholars' courses alongside classes in natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students can pursue specialized research through an optional senior thesis, gaining hands-on experience with historical topics of their choice.
