Renowned for pioneering literary analysis, it has gained global acclaim for its expertise in German and Yiddish literary works spanning from the Enlightenment era to contemporary times, alongside its interdisciplinary humanities methodologies. Mastering German offers significant value. The language boasts a profound legacy across numerous disciplines including literature, philosophical thought, social sciences, mathematics, and physics. As Germany maintains its position as a European powerhouse and leading export economy, proficiency in German becomes essential for global diplomacy and commerce.
Within Hopkins' undergraduate German curriculum, learners develop practical language skills while exploring the literary, philosophical, and cultural heritage of German-speaking societies. Through both language instruction and advanced seminars (conducted in English and German), students examine varied texts and cultural artifacts, follow their historical evolution from the Enlightenment onward, debate sociopolitical themes, and cultivate sophisticated analytical abilities within cross-disciplinary and international frameworks.
