As an anthropology student, you'll be taught by professors actively shaping key discussions in the discipline. You'll explore subjects including evolving spiritual traditions and religious conflicts, the effects of globalization and market competition, legal systems and governance challenges, emerging health threats and medical advancements, worldwide activist networks and cross-border media, plus ecological emergencies like global warming.
The anthropology program blends theoretical foundations with hands-on examination of human behavior, societal structures, cultural manifestations, and creative expressions throughout history and across civilizations - including students' own backgrounds. Special emphasis is placed on contemporary global challenges: modern spiritual movements and sectarian tensions, international economic integration and rivalry, legal frameworks and administrative difficulties, novel pathogens and healthcare solutions, planetary activist campaigns and borderless communication platforms, environmental disasters including atmospheric shifts, along with issues stemming from instability and poverty. Throughout, we emphasize understanding how changing institutional environments interact with worldwide, local, and national political forces that shape communities. Our approach connects instruction with investigation, encouraging undergraduates to engage in research while completing both introductory and upper-level anthropology courses. Each year, the Trouillot Essay Prize recognizes outstanding undergraduate anthropological writing. The curriculum introduces fundamental anthropological concepts and research techniques through seminars and guided projects addressing these timely subjects. Academic advisors assist students in crafting personalized course pathways aligned with their intellectual passions. Qualified students may also opt to complete an honors track within the major.
