The Peabody Conservatory's Trombone Department features faculty who currently or previously performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra, providing students with diverse artistic perspectives. The Artist Diploma program caters to highly skilled performers, focusing on professional preparation through specialized repertoire.
With just six to eight tenor trombonists and three bass trombonists, Peabody maintains an intimate studio environment that ensures individualized attention. Students benefit from fourteen weekly lessons each semester. Department gatherings include studio classes for orchestral technique development, performance strategy discussions, audition simulations, and solo recital collaborations. Under David Murray's direction, the Peabody Trombone Choir performs regularly at venues like the Towson University Trombone Workshop, Peabody's Friday Noon:30 Concert Series, and local churches.
