Statistics involves the systematic study of numerical data and finds uses across numerous disciplines. JMU offers a unique blend of close faculty-student collaboration typically seen at small liberal arts colleges, combined with the extensive resources of a larger university. Our professors actively involve students in their research, mentoring undergraduates through every stage of professional statistical research projects. Specialized conferences, student organizations, and undergraduate-focused initiatives foster strong community ties among our majors. The Statistics program caters to students passionate about statistical mathematics or pursuing advanced degrees in the field, offering two specialized paths: applied statistics and mathematical statistics. With a strong foundation in probability and statistical theory, the program enables further exploration in both practical and theoretical statistics, as well as mathematics. The department recommends supplementary electives to equip students for graduate-level studies.
