Industrial designers combine artistic vision with engineering principles, business acumen, and insights from sociology and anthropology to analyze human behavior and influence market trends. James Madison University's Industrial Design program fosters creative problem-solving abilities, preparing students to emerge as visionary leaders in the field. The Bachelor of Science in Art with an Industrial Design concentration comprises 78 credit hours across graphic design, fine arts, art history, and specialized design coursework, including 42 dedicated industrial design credits.
The curriculum covers sculptural techniques, visual communication, hands-on fabrication, material properties, social science research approaches, systemic analysis, historical context, written communication, and design philosophy. Students additionally gain foundational engineering knowledge, expertise in modern production techniques, and practical understanding of marketing strategies, business operations, and entrepreneurial fundamentals.
