This specialization is designed for students pursuing academic or professional paths that demand expertise in Earth system evolution, life sciences, and climate studies. The curriculum is structured to equip students with both foundational knowledge and research capabilities to investigate evolutionary patterns, mass extinctions, and planetary climate shifts through a geological lens. Geology examines the formation, composition, and development history of terrestrial planets.
This discipline offers diverse applications, ranging from GIS technology to environmental studies to extraterrestrial planetary analysis. At JMU, we encourage students to extend their learning beyond traditional classrooms through hands-on fieldwork. Whether conducting research in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley or participating in global initiatives like those in Ireland, our faculty actively involve majors in practical, field-oriented studies. With an exclusively undergraduate geology program, our students benefit from personalized mentorship by our distinguished faculty. A research component is mandatory for all majors, ensuring graduates enter their chosen fields not only career-ready but often with published works and conference presentation credentials. Our geology students transcend traditional academic roles—they become practicing researchers.
