Physics explores the fundamental principles governing the natural world and our observable universe. At JMU, physics students can tailor their academic journey to align with personal interests and professional aspirations. Our curriculum covers diverse physics disciplines such as materials science, computational physics, electronics, and applied nuclear physics. We strongly encourage undergraduates to engage in faculty-led research, frequently leading to conference presentations and collaborative publications. The department also provides numerous paid research positions in physics and astronomy.
Physics examines nature's fundamental laws that govern both the visible cosmos and the interactions between energy and matter. This encompasses everything from subatomic particles to cosmic evolution. Beyond acquiring scientific knowledge, physics cultivates a distinctive problem-solving mindset - whether investigating proton structure or applying interdisciplinary approaches from biology, chemistry, or geology to address real-world challenges.
