Students have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Foreign Languages alongside a minor in their chosen language. The department currently offers: Four-year programs in Arabic, French, German, Italian, and Spanish; three-year programs in Chinese and Japanese; and two-year programs in Ancient Greek, Latin, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. To major in languages, students must complete at least 33 upper-division credit hours in their selected language. At the heart of our mission is preparing students for rewarding careers and fulfilling lives. From securing internships to landing excellent first jobs or prestigious graduate school placements, JMU Dukes turn their aspirations into reality - and you can too. Our curriculum emphasizes effective communication in foreign languages while fostering cultural understanding and appreciation. Through student organizations, language conversation groups, and faculty guidance, our graduates are well-equipped to navigate global opportunities and pursue diverse career paths.
