Graduates from JMU's School of Media Arts and Design excel at storytelling. Our program equips students to become innovative, thoughtful, and technically proficient media creators who understand both the personal and societal influence of their work, as well as media's potential to benefit the public good.
Alumni from the School of Media Arts and Design build careers across media and related fields. With specialized concentrations, students can focus on journalism, digital filmmaking, advertising creativity, or interactive design. The curriculum also provides strong foundations for graduate studies in mass communication, journalism, advertising, visual media, or digital production. SMAD's flexible requirements enable students to complement their studies with minors or additional majors, deepening their expertise in specific storytelling domains. The School of Media Arts and Design delivers comprehensive training for media-focused professions. Students can specialize in journalism (print, broadcast, and digital), television and video production, corporate communications, or converged media (integrating print, video, and web). The program also lays the groundwork for pursuing advanced degrees in mass communication and related disciplines like journalism, corporate communications, visual media, or digital production.
