Overseen by the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management. This program culminates in a Bachelor of Science degree.
Total credits needed: 123, with at least 18 credits in AMD courses completed at Iowa State University (12 of these credits must be at the 3000-4000 level). The apparel, merchandising, and design major offers a comprehensive curriculum with adaptable program choices. Students take foundational courses in general education and the apparel industry core. To graduate, each student chooses a primary focus area: design, product development and innovation, merchandising and retail analytics, or fashion communication.
Available minors and certificates in apparel, merchandising, and design include: (a) textile science and product performance or (b) a textile design minor offered jointly with the College of Design, plus a merchandising certificate.
Program Learning Objectives
Graduates will demonstrate the ability to:
Communication. Employ effective written, oral, verbal, and digital (WOVE) communication methods to promote inquiry, teamwork, and professional involvement in apparel and related fields.
Self-evaluation. Assess personal knowledge, skills, and behaviors against professional benchmarks, pursue professional development, and apply self-reflection and peer feedback to enhance psychological, cognitive, social, and emotional health.
Analytical reasoning. Grasp core principles of apparel, merchandising, and design while applying critical analysis to address challenges from individual, academic, and career viewpoints.
Ethical Practice and Inclusion. Exhibit leadership and equity awareness to enhance global quality of life and promote socially conscious choices for both consumers and organizations.
