The Sports Capital Journalism Program serves as a cornerstone initiative within IUPUI's Department of Journalism and Public Relations. Through research projects, it analyzes the sports business while training the next generation of multimedia storytellers.

With its prime Indianapolis location—host to the NCAA headquarters, major league franchises, the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and numerous sports federations—the program offers unparalleled access for students to report on local, national, and global sporting events. This specialized degree prepares graduates with targeted expertise for careers across digital platforms, traditional media, and sports organizations at all levels of competition.

As America's pioneering graduate program in sports journalism, students leverage partnerships with elite sports entities including AP Sports Editors, NCAA, Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Indians, and IndyCar. Participants gain hands-on experience through event coverage teams and internship placements at major competitions.

Designed for both recent graduates (regardless of journalism experience) and early-career professionals, the program delivers expert sports media instruction through dedicated faculty. The curriculum blends practical training with theoretical study, addressing the intersection of print/digital journalism, PR, advertising, documentary production, and emerging technologies in today's sports landscape. Courses emphasize cross-platform adaptability through combined classroom and field-based learning.

The 30-credit Master of Arts can be finished in under 12 months.
