Our doctoral program equips you for diverse roles in nursing education, research, healthcare systems, or clinical science to improve care for individuals and families throughout their lives. Nurses with PhD degrees shape the future of the profession, educate upcoming nurses, and amplify nursing's influence on health policy and population health. While based at IUPUI, our PhD program offers remote learning options through video conferencing that connects you live with classmates, with the alternative of attending traditional in-person classes if desired. Required PhD courses are typically scheduled on one consistent weekday to help students plan their schedules effectively.
The program offers two entry pathways: from a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) to PhD or from a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) directly to PhD. Full-time students can complete the MSN-PhD track in three years (five years part-time), while the BSN-PhD track takes four years full-time (six years part-time).
Throughout your doctoral journey, you'll receive personalized guidance from faculty researchers who mentor you from start to finish. While following a unified core curriculum, you can specialize by working with faculty experts in either Clinical Nursing Science or Health Systems (which encompasses Nursing Education).
