The geographic information field has experienced significant expansion over the past twenty years. Driven by progress in data gathering, storage, and processing techniques, a novel academic domain has arisen: geographic information science. This field encompasses studies both about and utilizing spatial technologies like geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and global positioning systems (GPS).
Central to geographic information science is combining these technologies and applying them to spatial analysis challenges. While rooted in geographical principles, geographic information science's fundamental theories now influence nearly every discipline—from engineering and medicine to business, social sciences, and humanities—in both theoretical investigations and practical applications.
