The Indiana University School of Dentistry provides two pathways to obtain a dental assisting certificate: an in-person campus program and an online learning option. Both educational tracks hold accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation. To achieve Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) status, students must pass three Dental Assisting National Board examinations. The on-campus Dental Assisting Program spans two semesters of full-time study, involving 30 credit hours. This comprehensive curriculum features 14 core courses encompassing around 1,000 instructional hours through lectures, laboratory work, and clinical training. All coursework occurs at the School of Dentistry on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis' downtown area. A minimum of 300 clinical hours must be completed for certificate eligibility.
