This program enhances undergraduate education for exceptional biology majors, complementing all our degree tracks except Environmental Health.
Top students frequently engage in faculty-led research, and this initiative formally acknowledges and incorporates such work into their academic journey. The Biology Honors Program especially benefits those pursuing research careers or advanced studies in graduate or professional schools.
Sophomores maintaining a minimum 3.25 GPA by their second year's first semester will receive program invitations. Applications require academic transcripts and a personal statement detailing educational objectives, career aspirations, and reasons for seeking honors program admission. The biology department's honors committee will admit up to 12 students annually.
Accepted students will enroll in BIOL 484 Honors Seminar during junior year's first semester, complete two semesters of BIOL 483 Honors Thesis/Independent Study, and take one advanced biology course (500/600-level). Their thesis will stem from mentored research with a faculty expert in their chosen field, evaluated by a three-member committee including the research advisor and potentially one external member.
Prospective participants should consult advisors early to maintain required GPAs and prepare sophomore-year spring applications. While open to all qualified biology majors, the program particularly advantages students planning graduate or professional education. Honors designations appear on official transcripts, and program completers receive special recognition at departmental graduation events.
