The Honors Program welcomes declared sociology majors who meet specific criteria: a minimum 3.25 overall GPA and a 3.5 GPA in sociology courses, with departmental approval required.
Participants take CHSS 489 (a cross-disciplinary colloquium focused on problem-solving, discussions, readings, and writing around a central theme), SOC 483: Honors Thesis, and HNRC 499: Honors Senior Synthesis, which satisfies the Liberal Studies Synthesis requirement. A grade of C or better is mandatory in all track courses. Students should work with their advisors to understand how these honors courses fit within their existing sociology major requirements.
Eligible students can either be invited to apply or self-nominate. To qualify for the Sociology Honors track, applicants must have completed 15 sociology credits, including SOC 320: Sociological Theory. Qualified sociology majors should submit their application to the Department of Sociology chairperson after earning at least 56 credits.
