Doctoral candidates in Linguistics at Indiana University progress through coursework to become specialists in particular facets of language study. A distinctive aspect of IU's linguistics program mandates students to pursue a significant minor field outside the department, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations with faculty across campus. This often positions students at the forefront of developing innovative, cross-disciplinary research approaches that reshape linguistic perspectives. With one of the country's most extensive doctoral programs, students gain specialized knowledge across diverse domains - from acoustic phonetics to speech physiology, from logical discourse analysis to lexical borrowing patterns, from sociolinguistic adaptation to grammatical frameworks, and from second language acquisition theories to pedagogical applications. The Ph.D. curriculum equips graduates with comprehensive research and instructional competencies, preparing them for seamless transitions into postdoctoral roles or faculty positions.
