The Chinese Ph.D. program enables specialization in Chinese language and cultural studies while equipping students for university-level academic careers. At HLS, graduates develop mastery of Chinese language, discipline-specific research methodologies, and teaching skills. The doctoral curriculum requires a minimum of 30 departmental course credits plus 12-15 credits in an external field selected from options like comparative literature, fine arts, folklore, history, or political science. Chinese language study forms the foundation of the Ph.D. curriculum. Depending on research focus, students may need competence in a second modern or classical East Asian language. Additionally, reading ability in French, German, or another European language relevant to the research topic is mandatory.
