The Early Music Department provides both bachelor's and master's programs centered on historically informed performance using period instruments, enhanced by music theory and scholarly investigation of early music. Its research division, the Historical Performance Institute (HPI), produces publications, audio recordings, and organizes conferences focused on early music. The department attracts international students who train with our world-renowned faculty in early instrument performance or vocal techniques. Being situated within a leading university, the department and HPI collaborate with other disciplines such as music history, literary studies, medieval research, linguistics, and visual arts.
All undergraduate music degrees require completion of at least 120 credit hours (not counting I400 and major ensemble courses). Certain degree programs may have additional credit requirements due to specialized coursework.
