The Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance prepares talented students pursuing professional dance careers while benefiting from Indiana University's excellent liberal arts curriculum. Admission to the B.F.A. program requires an audition, usually conducted before the first year begins. The curriculum encompasses dance technique, repertoire, improvisation, choreography, teaching methods, dance history, music, production, movement analysis, injury prevention, and Pilates certification. Students also complete a rigorous academic curriculum with arts and humanities requirements. This dance program combines artistic excellence with intensive training while maintaining a solid theoretical foundation crucial for developing well-rounded artists and accomplished dance professionals. An audition is mandatory for admission to the dance program within the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance. All majors perform with the Indiana University Contemporary Dance Theatre, participating in faculty/guest artist productions and student choreography showcases. Senior students organize an annual fall concert. Additional performance opportunities exist with university opera productions, musical theater programs, the African American Dance Company, and Bloomington's local modern dance ensemble, Windfall Dancers. Dance students may also perform at national and international festivals and conferences.
