Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) represent expanding disciplines with diverse applications across environmental science, national security, demographics, intelligence, forestry, disaster response, environmental conservation, climate studies, urban development, law enforcement, food systems, and agriculture. At Indiana University Bloomington, the Geography department serves as the primary hub for GIS and Remote Sensing education. Our GIS/RS specialization equips students with expertise in processing, managing, and applying spatial data through digital geospatial analysis. This program develops practical competencies for examining societal and ecological patterns through spatial perspectives. Coursework covers foundational concepts, theoretical frameworks, and technical training in GPS technology, digital cartography, satellite/airborne imagery interpretation, geospatial visualization, and cross-disciplinary spatial modeling. Graduates of this program pursue careers as environmental specialists, city planners, academic educators, market researchers, map designers, geospatial information specialists, emergency response coordinators, and natural resource investigators.
