The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) master's program falls under Information Systems. This interdisciplinary curriculum is jointly offered by the School of Information Technology and the Institute for Geospatial Analysis and Mapping within the Department of Geography, Geology, and Environmental Sciences. At Illinois State, the GIS program equips students with core competencies to utilize existing GIS tools while fostering skills to create next-generation systems. The curriculum blends theoretical foundations with hands-on GIS application experience. Learners conduct statistical evaluations and spatial interpretations by correlating geographic coordinates across diverse datasets. Coursework additionally addresses geospatial data along with methods for its collection, storage, retrieval, and visualization. Depending on career aspirations, participants may opt for a thesis, capstone project, or additional coursework to fulfill degree requirements.
