The French and Francophone Studies program provides an interdisciplinary approach to examining the rich cultural tapestry of the Francophone sphere, encompassing language, literature, arts, political systems, philosophical thought, and various domains of human creativity and intellectual pursuit. Students benefit from intimate faculty interaction in seminar-style courses and frequently participate in study abroad programs in Angers, Grenoble (France), or Québec (Canada) for academic terms or summer sessions. Extracurricular engagements such as Pi Delta Phi (French Honor Society), language conversation groups, visiting scholar presentations, community service initiatives, and curated film screenings provide immersive French language practice beyond formal instruction. As one of the world's most widely spoken languages—present on every continent and within our Bloomington-Normal community—French holds strategic importance as a critical language recognized by the Department of Defense and serves as an official language for numerous international institutions including the UN, Red Cross, European Court of Justice, and International Olympic Committee. French language proficiency creates professional pathways in government, nonprofit work, tourism, healthcare, commerce, legal fields, tech industries, fashion, media, and education. Mastering French enhances both written and verbal communication skills (including in English), prepares students for international career opportunities, and fosters deeper understanding of global human experiences.
