Illinois Tech's astrophysics program emphasizes rigorous physics training, delivering comprehensive knowledge of the core physical principles that form the foundation of astrophysics. Students explore diverse areas including planetary systems, stellar phenomena, galactic structures, extragalactic astronomy, cosmology, and observational methods. Gain hands-on experience with optical observation using the department's 130-mm Takahashi telescope.

Our tight-knit department fosters numerous research opportunities. The curriculum for bachelor's degrees in astrophysics and physics is structured to enable most students to earn dual degrees in both disciplines within four years. This unique dual-degree pathway offers significant benefits, equipping graduates with expanded knowledge, enhanced skills, and greater career prospects compared to pursuing either degree separately. Alumni have successfully advanced to graduate programs in both astrophysics and physics. The program's strong physics focus also provides excellent preparation for immediate employment in either private industry or government sectors after graduation.
