A master's degree in geology can include the designation "Emphasis in Environmental Geoscience" if the student fulfills standard degree requirements while also completing at least 9 credits in approved graduate courses within this specialization. Candidates seeking this additional designation must submit a revised program of study form to the Graduate School. Potential focus areas for the curriculum include, but aren't restricted to: hydrology of surface and groundwater systems, environmental geochemistry, surface geological processes, landform evolution, geological hazards (volcanic, seismic, etc.), environmental geophysical methods, hazardous site evaluation and cleanup, or studies of Neogene and Quaternary periods. Relevant courses from other scientific and engineering fields may also be incorporated.
The proposed course of study requires approval from the student's graduate advisory committee and may combine coursework from Boise State University and the University of Idaho. Collaborative graduate committees involving both institutions are particularly encouraged.
