As certified oral health practitioners and instructors, dental hygienists collaborate with various healthcare providers as part of the dental team. They combine expertise in biomedical, dental, clinical, and social sciences to help individuals and communities attain and preserve optimal oral health. Their responsibilities include delivering preventive care, conducting initial assessments, taking X-rays, applying sealants, performing nonsurgical periodontal treatments, administering fluoride applications, and educating patients. In certain states, hygienists' duties have grown to encompass additional procedures like administering local anesthetics, providing nitrous oxide sedation, and performing restorative treatments. Serving as specialized co-therapists, hygienists play a vital role in preventing oral diseases, stopping their progression, and sustaining oral wellness. The educational program nurtures student development, cultivates critical thinking and ethical decision-making, and fosters continuous learning. The comprehensive curriculum blends classroom teaching, lab work, and clinical training to produce skilled practitioners proficient in modern dental hygiene techniques. Students gain clinical expertise in both conventional and advanced procedures, with special focus on preventive, therapeutic, and nonsurgical treatments crucial for comprehensive patient care. Consequently, graduates gain deeper dental knowledge, enhanced teamwork skills within oral health teams, and broader career opportunities. Idaho State University's Dental Hygiene program also prepares graduates for advanced studies in dental hygiene or related disciplines. The program maintains full accreditation from the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.
