The Howard University Department of Physics and Astronomy aims to achieve national and global prominence in physics research and education while ensuring African American students and other underrepresented groups have optimal opportunities to excel in physics. The Department began granting Master of Science degrees in the 1930s and introduced its PhD program in the 1960s. Its graduate program objectives are to: 1. Become the nation's top producer of African American physics PhDs, and 2. Develop into the country's leading small-scale program in specific physics specialties. The astrophysics and cosmology faculty engage in pioneering research on foundational topics in their fields.
