The Genetics & Human Genetics graduate program prepares students for Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. degrees through rigorous training standards. This interdisciplinary program collaborates with the Pediatrics and Biology departments, allowing students to explore their specialized interests while maintaining connections to clinical and scientific fields. During the first year, all students receive foundational training in human genetics before selecting their focus area with faculty guidance. Students can choose from elective courses across university departments and the Washington Area Consortium of Universities. Dissertation research spans diverse topics, provided students find appropriate faculty mentors. Recognizing genetics' growing importance in biomedical research, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration. With a strong research focus, the curriculum examines genetic mechanisms underlying health and disease, equipping graduates for laboratory research careers. The Ph.D. program specifically develops independent research capabilities in human genetics.
