Howard University's political science program goes beyond conventional academic boundaries seen at other schools. We educate students in analyzing political systems, processes, and behaviors through empirical methods, while emphasizing African American and Black Diaspora politics - from worldwide freedom movements to the examination of Black political spaces.
The Political Science Ph.D. program at Howard's Graduate School equips graduates for professional paths in education, government, policy, legal fields, and international relations, along with high-level research and advisory roles. Students gain from Howard's prime location in Washington, D.C., the heart of U.S. politics and policy formation, with connections to leading research centers, consulting groups, policy institutes, and government bodies. Doctoral candidates can specialize in one of four areas: American government, Black political studies, comparative government, or global affairs. The program allows customization through two primary and one secondary focus area, plus the chance to conduct groundbreaking research aligned with personal academic goals. The Political Science Department strives to maintain and grow its role as a key producer of scholars focused on matters affecting African-descended populations worldwide.
